    • Treasurer Dave VE3UGT

  • Tim brought the meeting to order at 7:31 and welcomed members, guests and our newest member Jim VA3TXT

  • Business From Nov. Minutes:
    • Tim said the signs are made and showed one, they will be used to identify communicators during callouts, emergencies, MS Walk, etc.

    • Q.A.R.C. paid the club's R.A.C. insurance premium for 2012, $613.61

    • Dave VE3UGT reported once we found out how much a cot for expecting fathers at BGH was, over $2500, it was decided this was too expensive a project.
    • He also said he is still working on his spreadsheet of Quinte Area Hams

  • Tim passed around a birthday card for everyone to sign, it will be sent to Honourary Life Member Al Smith VE3GI for his 90th birthday. Al got his Amateur licence in 1946.

  • Tim announced the following:
    • 2012 is Q.A.R.C.'s 65th Anniversary

    • due to lack of co-ordinators and volunteers to plan and work the dog sled race, there will be no Eldorado Gold Cup race this year.

    • from the estate of Richard Hayes VE3EER are the following items: TS-430S, Tuner, powersupply, FT-221R, FT-209R. Contact Tim ve3uo@rac.ca if interested in any of the above.

    • Tim has tentatively planned to have Bill Unger, VE3XT, RAC Ontario North/East Director, give a presentation via Skype at our April 18 Meeting. Bill is the chair of the RAC Task Force to Seek an Exemption for Ontario Amateurs under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. For details see http://www.rac.ca/en/news/bulletins/2011/24-0/

    • Winter Field Day Jan 28 & 29. It is planned to have a station set up on Saturday for a few hours at the St John St parking lot, Meyers Pier marina. (Photo Gallery of 2011 Winter Field Day.)

    • This year's Community Policing Pitter-Patter Run will be on Sunday April 22 (conflict with Loyalist ARES Meeting) Background Checks are required, Tim has forms. Cst Rene Aubertin of Belleville Police Service will be at our Feb meeting to pick up forms.

  • Repeater Report:
    • VHF Repeater 146.985 was off air on Jan 4 - Tim discovered a power supply problem so replaced the power supply. The repeater is now in service but with no DC back-up. Seems the Powergate was not charging the battery. He took the 12v battery home for recharging.
    • Also had a problem with spurious signal keying the repeater. As a result the repeater was on tone input for a few days. The signal has disappeared so the repeater is now back to carrier access. However, users should keep their CTCSS enabled on their radios full time.

    • UHF repeater 444.475 is on the air for testing, from VE3BIP's QTH. No tones on it currently. Dave is working on eliminating audio hum and mounting components in one package. Dave thinks Rx is a bit insensitive.

  • ARES Report: Bill VA3WOW is working on his year-end A.R.E.S. report, it will be posted on the Loyalist ARES website when completed.

    • the 2012 Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour from Ottawa to Kingston and back the next day, June 9th and 10th, has been cancelled, also due to lack of co-ordinators and volunteers

    • the Hilly Hundred is still being planned in Bancroft area for September

    • the next Loyalist ARES Meeting will be on April 22

    • Peter VE3UR reminds everyone of the Winter Field Day as reported above, anyone interested in taking part is welcome. For details see http://www.spar-hams.org/contests/winterfd/index.php

    • Doug VE3ZDG reports the town of Napanee has six amateur stations installed at different locations, ready for testing. Doug will be looking for helpers sometime in the spring to do tests.

  • Greg VE3CH, on behalf of the Loyalist College Amateur Club VE3ALC thanked Q.A.R.C. for the donation of a High Gain vertical antenna to replace the one damaged by ice.

  • Cliff VA3CAF told us there was a meeting of some of the former members of the old Trenton radio club, they estimate there will be 18 to 20 amateurs getting together to organize a new club. They were thinking of calling the new club Quinte West Amateur Radio Club, but wanted to ask us if there was any chance of a problem with a similar name. A discussion was held, after which the decision was there shouldn't be a problem. Watch for more news of the club growing.

  • Len VE3LRM and Kevin VA3THB gave a report on the radio work they did for the Rally of the Tall Pines, Bancroft, last November. They were kept very busy, using two repeaters and Simplex. For the first time, students from Loyalist College provided live Internet coverage of the event. The next rally is in November 2012, they can use all the help they can get, if you are interested in helping with this event, contact Kevin or Len, they would be glad to hear from you.

  • BREAK - thanks Brian VA3BRW for the drinks and snacks prior to your presentation.

  • There is a possibility of a CW course in the future, anyone who is interested in taking part contact Mike ve3ox@rac.ca

    • WI-FI INsecurity;
    • APRS sans radio (via Ipad);
    • his X-10 home automation installation.
    Very interesting Brian, thank you.

  • Bill VA3WOW informed us of some wireless routers with 8 digit ID numbers need the "WPS" system turned off for security reasons. An article on the subject can be found here: http://blog.insecure.in/?p=1059
